Thanks so much for this. I'm undertaking my first journey as a documentary filmmaker. I have yet to experience what you have but your emphasis on what drives you and what gives you satisfaction (need stronger word here as I feel it's much more to you) really speaks to me. A documentarian friend suggested I also document my journey making the film, especially since I'm making it with my kid. This has been just as impactful as actually making the film. Creating my audience from day one and getting amazing response has been another inspiration.
Thanks Tom! Congrats on your new project. I love that you're making something with your kid and those memories will be worth infinitely more than the finished project. I think the way to stay sane is to figure out what your "one thing" is. Your reason for creating. Mine is all about community: "To make beautiful things with beautiful people and inspire others to do the same." So that kinda becomes my compass for success but also for decision making along the way. And it's something that (as opposed to fame & fortune) is under my control and I can do it every day! Excited to follow along with your journey.
I've been told by others to not lose focus on why I'm doing it. It's a deeply personal telling of the stories of fellow activists and what led them from personal empathy to universal empathy. I've been writing more or less stream-of conscious posts on my Substack. Love for you to follow me on my journey. Thanks brother.
